Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, has officially ordered the demolition of suspected terrorist hideouts in Okene Local Government Area, as part of the state’s ongoing efforts to combat insecurity. The operation began with the demolition of a suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) stronghold in Sambel, Idoji, following a series of banditry attacks in the region. The move aims to dismantle criminal bases and curb the activities of insurgents operating within the area.
This crackdown comes amid heightened concerns over the increasing presence of extremist groups in Kogi State. A few months prior, renowned cleric Sheikh Gumi claimed that about 90 percent of terrorists operating in Kogi and the broader South-West region are Ebira youths influenced by extremist ideologies. Such remarks underline the growing threat posed by radicalization among local youth, which has been linked to various acts of violence and insecurity.
Additionally, security authorities recently rearrested and arraigned the alleged mastermind behind the Deeper Life Bible Church attack in Okene. The suspect is believed to be a senior figure within the Ansaru terrorist group, further highlighting the dangerous infiltration of extremist elements into the community.
In response to these threats, the Kogi State government has reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating all forms of criminality. Governor Ododo emphasized the government’s resolve to conduct comprehensive operations aimed at eliminating terrorist hideouts and criminal networks, with the ultimate goal of restoring lasting peace and stability to the state. The move reflects the government’s proactive approach to tackling insecurity and protecting residents from the scourge of terrorism and banditry.
