Labour Ministry Urges Flexibility as Negotiations Over Minimum Wage Stall

The Federal Government has called on organized labour to adopt a considerate and patriotic approach in ongoing negotiations for a new national minimum wage.

This appeal comes after the Tripartite Committee on the Minimum Wage negotiations saw the government proposing N60,000, while labour unions demanded N494,000.

In a statement by Olajide Oshundun, Director of Press and Public Relations for the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Minister of State for Labour and Employment Nkeiruka Onyejeocha stated the government’s commitment to a fair wage amidst economic recovery. “We appeal to organized labour and other relevant stakeholders to be considerate and patriotic in their demands, recognizing that our economy is still recovering from the devastating effects of the pandemic and other global economic shocks,” Onyejeocha stated.

The minister outlined the government’s ongoing efforts to secure a realistic wage for Nigerian workers, balancing economic constraints with the need for improved living standards. “We are committed to putting the people first and ensuring that our economic policies benefit all Nigerians, not just a select few,” Onyejeocha added.
