Lagos State Government Shuts Down 13 Markets Over Waste Management Violations

The Lagos State Government has taken action by shutting down 13 markets in the Ketu and Mile 12 areas due to ongoing violations of local waste management regulations.

The state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the closures in an early morning post on X on Friday. He highlighted that the markets had repeatedly disregarded regulations, particularly in terms of illegal waste disposal on roads, medians, and highways, in violation of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.

Wahab mentioned that the enforcement action occurred on Thursday night, emphasizing that it was essential for protecting public health and restoring order to the heavily congested areas of the city. “As part of our commitment to maintaining environmental standards, we successfully sealed Ketu and Mile 12 markets for ongoing violations, including illegal waste disposal,” he stated.

He urged market stakeholders to take accountability for effective waste management moving forward, saying, “Let us collaborate to create a cleaner, safer, and more responsible Lagos.”

Among the markets affected by the closures are Erukan Market and Oja Oba Market in Ketu, both known for poor waste management practices. Other markets and shops impacted by the clampdown include Owoseni Tundas Market, Oba Ogunjobi Market, and various retail outlets at the Mile 12 BRT Terminal and Bus Stop, as well as Ketu Terminal Market, which encompasses six plazas.

Additionally, the operation extended to Ifesowapo Shop Owners Market, Demurin St Plaza Shops, Ifelodun Market, and other businesses including the occupant at 6 Demurin Road, alongside the Ibadan Unit 1 Park located between Babajide Sanwo-Olu Market and Ikosi Fruit Market, and the Ketu Tipper Garage.
