Liverpool Seal £116m Signing of Florian Wirtz
Liverpool have completed a £116 million transfer agreement to sign German attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. The deal comprises a £100 million base fee, with an additional £16 million in performance-related bonuses.
According to a Friday report by BBC Sport, the potential total could surpass the British transfer record set by Chelsea’s £107 million signing of Enzo Fernandez in 2023—if Liverpool maintain consistent top-level success.
The fee includes a guaranteed £100m and a further £16m in add-ons.
Those bonus payments would become payable if the Reds achieve a sustained level of success at the elite level, and would only then become a British record.
The British record for an initial fee remains Chelsea’s £107m signing of Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in 2023.
Chelsea also brought in Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo for an initial £100m fee, which could rise to £115m.
Manchester City had been keen on Wirtz before cooling their interest because of the costs involved in the deal, while Bayern Munich were also linked with him.
Wirtz made his debut for Bayer Leverkusen at just 17 and went on to score 57 goals in 197 appearances for the club. He played a pivotal role in helping them secure their first-ever Bundesliga title in 2024. On the international stage, he has netted seven goals in 31 appearances for Germany since making his debut in 2021.
His versatility will be a major asset for Liverpool—capable of operating centrally or cutting in from the left. Wirtz is known for his exceptional ability to break lines and deliver decisive final passes. He excels at finding space between the lines and is expected to contribute goals as well.
Defensively, his off-the-ball work is strong, but questions remain about how quickly he’ll adapt to the Premier League’s faster pace and physical demands. Still, with his impressive work ethic and technical brilliance, Liverpool are undoubtedly adding a highly skilled and dedicated player to their squad.
