Minister: FG releases N50bn for primary health centres
The Federal Government has allocated nearly N50bn directly to Primary Health Centres (PHCs) nationwide through the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF).
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, disclosed this on Monday via his official X handle.
According to him, the administration of President Bola Tinubu has also approved over N20bn for the renovation and upgrade of 4,362 PHCs across 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory.
He explained that the BHCPF—funded by at least one per cent of the Federal Government’s Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF) alongside donor contributions—provides a Basic Minimum Package of Health Services (BMPHS). This initiative, he noted, is designed to expand fiscal space for health and strengthen the national health system.
“I am pleased to inform you that from 2023 to date, nearly N50 billion has been disbursed directly to Primary Health Centres @NphcdaNG across the country, through the Fund, with verifiably impressive results, and this has led to the qualitative modernisation of health infrastructure across all local government areas of Nigeria.”
Pate also highlighted progress under the government’s health insurance drive, revealing that enrollment is set to surpass the 2024 record of 2.4 million citizens later this year.
According to the minister, more than 37 million visits to PHCs were recorded nationwide in the first quarter of 2025 alone, reflecting what he described as a data-driven re-engineering of the country’s healthcare delivery system.
He further stated that President Tinubu’s administration has, within the past two years, released over N20bn under the BHCPF to rehabilitate and upgrade 4,362 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with equally significant progress recorded in the southern states.
Highlighting the impact, he noted that more than 37 million visits to PHCs were recorded across all local government areas in Nigeria during the first quarter of 2025 alone. According to him, this reflects an ongoing, data-driven transformation of basic healthcare delivery for Africa’s most populous nation.
