Minority caucus in House of Reps calls for urgent economic, political reforms
The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives has urged swift political and economic reforms to tackle long-standing challenges and place the nation on the path to sustainable development.
Minority Leader, Rep. Kingsley Chinda (PDP–Rivers), made the call in a statement issued in Abuja to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary.
Chinda noted that the occasion should go beyond celebration, serving instead as a time for sober reflection. He stressed that the allocation of national resources must be fair and inclusive, ensuring that every Nigerian benefits, regardless of region, religion, or ethnicity.
We must face the uncomfortable truth that our political and economic structures need deliberate and timely reforms.
“We must be fair, frank and firm. It is only when we are true and factual about our state of nationhood that the country can wriggle out of stymied development towards achieving her full potential as a prosperous country.
“Indeed, as a nation, we face issues of governance and a lack of inclusive economic growth that have left vast segments of our population trapped in poverty.
The recurring problems of insecurity, hunger, youth unemployment and infrastructure deficits are persistent obstacles to our nation’s development.
He lamented that the ideals of equity, fairness, and justice—principles meant to hold the nation together—are increasingly under strain, creating divisions that endanger national unity and development.
The Minority Leader paid tribute to Nigeria’s founding fathers and past heroes who made immense sacrifices to secure the independence enjoyed today.
He urged leaders at all levels to show genuine commitment to the welfare of citizens and uphold accountability, emphasizing that nation-building remains a continuous collective responsibility.
He further called on Nigerians to recommit themselves to peace, unity, and development, stressing the need to embrace the country’s diversity as a source of strength rather than division.
“No single group, no matter how powerful, can drive meaningful progress alone. We must unite as one people, with a shared sense of purpose, understanding, and cooperation, to overcome our challenges and emerge stronger.
“On this Independence Day, let us renew our hope and dedication to building a greater Nigeria—one that honors the dreams of our founding fathers and meets the aspirations of future generations,” he said.
