Mohbad’s Family Calls for Transparent Investigation and Seeks Court-Confirmed Paternity as Dispute Over Estate Continues

The family of the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has renewed its call for a transparent and independent investigation into the circumstances of his death. In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by family head Omolayo Aloba and Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, the family also directed Wunmi Adebanjo, the singer’s partner, to stop using the Aloba surname until a court-ordered DNA test confirms paternity.

The family emphasized its commitment to justice and truth, asserting that it has appointed new legal representatives to handle estate and DNA matters. They announced Oladayo Ogungbe of Ogungbe & Ogungbe Attorneys as the sole legal counsel for all estate and DNA cases, while Dr. Wahab Shittu, SAN, will continue representing the family in investigative communications.

Regarding Mohbad’s estate, the family appointed three administrators—Ajewole Aloba, Rasaq Famuyiwa, and Alonge Aloba—to manage his assets, royalties, and intellectual property. They stated that these administrators would apply for legal authority to oversee estate matters, including royalties and properties. The family also left open the possibility for Wunmi Adebanjo to join the estate administration if a court confirms Liam, her child with Mohbad, is his biological son.

Additionally, the family urged Wunmi to cease using the Aloba surname publicly and privately until paternity is confirmed through the DNA test. They clarified that no marriage or traditional rites were performed between Mohbad and Wunmi. If DNA results confirm paternity, both mother and child will be recognized within the estate process. The family appealed for calm and respect for the judicial process, emphasizing that the DNA test aims to ensure fairness, not to vilify anyone. A new burial and memorial date will be announced after legal and family matters are resolved.

Legal representative of Wunmi, Kabir Akingbolu, criticized the family’s directive, describing it as misleading and unlawful. He explained that despite court orders for DNA testing, the family has repeatedly withdrawn from the process and changed legal representatives. He reaffirmed Wunmi’s right to retain the Aloba surname, citing constitutional and legal precedents, and expressed readiness for the DNA test at any time.

This dispute is part of an ongoing legal and familial conflict over Mohbad’s estate and paternity of his son, which has garnered significant public attention following the singer’s death at age 27 on September 12, 2023. The circumstances surrounding his death continue to provoke controversy, with investigations recently launched by Lagos State authorities.
