José Mourinho has expressed frustration over a series of controversial decisions affecting his teams in European competitions, suggesting they may be linked to the fallout from the 2023 UEFA Europa League final in Budapest.
Speaking after his team’s latest European fixture, Mourinho reflected on the string of contentious moments that have followed him since the final, where his side lost and he received a suspension for his conduct.
“Since that final, since my suspension, the things that happened to us—we didn’t play Champions League because of a 120th-minute penalty that only the fourth official saw,” Mourinho said.
He also voiced concerns over recent officiating, particularly regarding a VAR decision during the match. “Today we come here and the VAR, considered one of the best, didn’t see one of three penalties. I just hope it’s random.”
Mourinho emphasized that he had already paid the price with his suspension and hoped the streak of misfortunes was merely coincidental. “I pray that this is just bad luck,” he concluded.
