NANS Insists on Nationwide Protest Against Petrol Price Hike

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has reaffirmed its commitment to staging a nationwide protest against the recent increase in petrol prices. Henry Okuomo, Senate President of NANS, made this declaration during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily program on Friday.

Okuomo emphasized that the protest is not a threat but a necessary action in response to the current economic hardship faced by Nigerians. He stated, “We are not threatening a strike. That is what we are going to do because of the current situation in the country. Nigerians are currently facing a lot. We are facing hardship, and now, the government has increased fuel prices again.”

The student group, representing over 40 million Nigerian students, demands not only a reduction in fuel prices but also addressing other issues affecting the nation. Okuomo warned that if the government fails to reverse the hardship policies, NANS will take to the streets on September 15.

This stance contradicts an earlier statement by NANS President Afeez Akinteye, who denied plans for a protest and called for an investigation into the source of the misinformation. However, Okuomo’s declaration confirms NANS’ determination to proceed with the protest, adding pressure on the government to reconsider the petrol price hike.
