NANS President Calls for High-Level Investigation into School Abductions.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has attributed the rising wave of school abductions in Nigeria to the failure of the country’s internal security system. In a statement issued on Wednesday, NANS President Olushola Oladoja criticized the ineffective implementation of the Safe School Initiative, despite substantial funding and repeated government assurances.
Oladoja expressed frustration over the ongoing cycle of violence that has persisted for over a decade, resulting in grief and loss without tangible justice or safety reforms for students. He pointed out that numerous schools have fallen victim to terrorists due to poor coordination, intelligence failures, and complacency among leadership.
The student leader also placed blame on police leadership, suggesting that the collapse of internal security has emboldened terrorists to carry out repeated attacks on educational institutions. Oladoja warned that Nigeria must cease rewarding incompetence, especially in matters that threaten lives and national stability.
Highlighting the recent attack in Kebbi, he raised concerns about potential insider sabotage, noting that the terrorists struck shortly after a reported military withdrawal. This timing has raised suspicions about possible complicity or internal lapses within security agencies.
Oladoja called for the establishment of a high-level investigation panel comprising the National Security Adviser, Minister of Defence, Chief of Defence Staff, and Service Chiefs. The panel should thoroughly examine security lapses, command failures, and the reasons behind repeated troop withdrawals before major attacks. He emphasized that accountability and improved coordination are crucial to ending the cycle of violence that continues to threaten Nigeria’s educational system and national security.
