National Senior Secondary Education Commission to Roll Out Ranking System for Schools

The National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) is set to introduce a ranking system for senior secondary schools across Nigeria. This move aims to promote transparency and accountability in the education sector.

According to Dr. Iyela Ajayi, Executive Secretary of the Commission, the ranking will be based on the minimum benchmark standards for senior secondary schools, focusing on teacher qualifications, infrastructure, curriculum adherence, and more.

Dr. Ajayi explained that the ranking system is designed to help parents and guardians make informed decisions when choosing schools for their children. “The ranking will enable parents and guardians to make decisions as regards the choice of schools they want to put their children in,” he said.

This initiative is expected to promote healthy competition among schools, driving them to improve their standards and provide quality education.

The NSSEC’s decision to introduce a ranking system is reminiscent of the National Universities Commission’s (NUC) ranking of universities. Dr. Ajayi noted that “just like the NUC releases ranking for universities, we at NSSEC will also release our ranking for senior secondary schools in the country from next year.”

In addition to the ranking system, the NSSEC is working towards revitalizing 50 senior secondary schools nationwide. This initiative follows a special intervention by the National Assembly, which allocated funds for the project. Dr. Ajayi explained that “the plan is to revitalise 50 senior secondary schools across the country… work has started.”
