NBTE Reviews Polytechnic Curriculum to Emphasize Entrepreneurship Development
The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has announced a review of the curriculum for polytechnics across the country, with a focus on entrepreneurship development to address the nation’s unemployment challenge.
According to the Executive Secretary of NBTE, Prof. Idris Bugaje, the revised curriculum aims to equip graduates with the skills to either secure jobs or become self-employed.
Speaking at a workshop for academics in polytechnics and technical institutions, Bugaje emphasized the critical role of entrepreneurship in the ability of graduates to succeed.
He noted that the curriculum for teaching entrepreneurship courses was reviewed last year, and the current workshop is focused on delivering these courses effectively. Additionally, books are being developed to support the impartation of entrepreneurship knowledge to students.
Bugaje stressed that the future of Nigerian youths lies not in paper qualifications but in becoming worthwhile entrepreneurs. He highlighted the distinction between entrepreneurship programs and skills development programs, noting that entrepreneurship focuses on starting and running a business, while skills development focuses on acquiring a specific skill.
The Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Sonny Echono, commended the Committee of Rectors for reviewing the curriculum to focus on entrepreneurship and skills development. He emphasized that this approach will promote employment and benefit the nation through individual skill sets, resources, and exchange.
