NCC Announces Final Deadline for NIN-SIM Linkage, Sets September 14, 2024, as Completion Date

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a final directive to all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to complete the compulsory verification and linkage of Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) to National Identity Numbers (NINs) by September 14, 2024.

In a statement signed by Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs, the Commission noted that over 153 million SIMs have been successfully linked to a NIN, representing a 96% compliance rate.

The NCC emphasized the importance of complete linkage for enhancing trust and security in the digital economy, reducing fraud and cybercrime risks, and promoting financial inclusion and economic growth.

The Commission also revealed that it has identified cases of individuals possessing an unusually high number of SIM cards, with some exceeding 100,000, through collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

To ensure full compliance, the NCC has directed MNOs to complete the mandatory verification and linkage by September 14, 2024. Effective September 15, 2024, no SIM operating in Nigeria will be without a valid NIN.

The Commission urged the public to update their details before the deadline and reminded them that the sale and purchase of pre-registered SIMs are criminal offenses punishable by imprisonment and fines. The NCC thanked the public for their cooperation and encouraged citizens to report any illegal activities through their toll-free line (622) or social media platforms.
