Nigeria, Brazil sign bilateral defence pact
Nigeria and Brazil have moved to deepen their bilateral ties with the signing of a Defence Agreement during the second session of the Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism, held on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The agreement was signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar, on behalf of the Nigerian government, while Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin signed on behalf of his country.
According to a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday evening by the Personal Assistant on Media and Publicity to the minister, Mr. Mati Ali, the agreement marks a significant milestone in the diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The three-day Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism served as a platform for both countries to explore new investment opportunities and enhance cooperation in key areas such as defence, agriculture, trade, and industry.
The event serves as a platform for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to explore new investment opportunities, enhance cooperation in defence, agriculture, trade, and industry, Science and Technology, as well as strengthen strategic business partnerships between Nigeria and Brazil,” the statement read.
The agreement also covers other key areas, including Renewable Energy and Cultural Exchange.

Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar, expressed optimism about the newly signed agreement, stating that it would strengthen Nigeria’s defence capabilities and support economic growth. He described the deal as a reflection of the deepening diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Brazil.
The statement further noted that the Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism serves as a vital platform for both nations to collaborate and engage in discussions on shared interests.
It added that the agreement is anticipated to positively influence the economies of both countries by fostering cooperation in the defence sector, enhancing security, and encouraging economic development. It will also open avenues for Nigerian businesses to collaborate with their Brazilian counterparts.
The statement concluded by describing the agreement as a timely and welcome move for Nigeria’s economy, which has faced various challenges, adding that it is expected to boost investor confidence and stimulate economic growth.
