Nigeria Shines Bright at Vibrant Opening Ceremony of African School Games
The much-anticipated inaugural African School Games commenced with great fanfare at the iconic 19 May 1956 Stadium in Annaba, Algeria, on Saturday, July 26, 2025.
Showcasing a vibrant mix of culture, sportsmanship, and unity, young athletes from across Africa gathered to celebrate the Olympic spirit, the energy of youth, and the continent’s shared future.
However, it was Team Nigeria that captured the spotlight, receiving enthusiastic cheers from the crowd as they entered with infectious enthusiasm, proudly dressed in striking green-and-white uniforms symbolizing the nation’s bold spirit. The Nigerian delegation, consisting of 60 student-athletes competing across 10 sports, displayed remarkable confidence and unity, earning widespread admiration from spectators and the media alike.
Participating nations included Namibia, Uganda, Zambia, Niger, Mauritius, Ghana, Libya, Djibouti, Tanzania, Seychelles, Tunisia, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sierra Leone, São Tomé and Príncipe, among many others, alongside host nation Algeria.
Scheduled to run from July 26 to August 5, 2025, the Games aim to foster friendship, cultural exchange, and youth development through sport. This landmark event ushers in a new era for African school sports, providing a platform for young talents to shine on an international stage.
All eyes will be on Nigeria as they compete for glory, medals, and the honor of proudly flying their flag at the continent’s premier student sporting event.
