Nigerians Struggle To Access Subsidized Rice Initiative

Despite the Federal Government’s launch of subsidized rice sales at N40,000 per 50kg bag, Nigerians are finding it challenging to locate points of sale, sparking widespread frustration.

The initiative, announced by Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Abubakar Kyari, aimed to provide affordable rice to citizens with a National Identity Number. However, residents in Abuja claim they cannot find the subsidized rice, forcing them to purchase local rice at market prices.

“I’ve searched everywhere in Abuja, but I couldn’t find the N40,000 per bag rice,” said Benedicta Okoro, a civil servant. “I ended up buying local rice for N84,000 per 50kg bag at Dutse Market.”

Amina Aliyu, another resident, urged the government to provide clarity on the distribution. “How can you launch a subsidized rice program and nobody can access it? The government needs to come clean.”

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has yet to respond to inquiries on the matter.
