NIMC Cautions Against Unauthorized Disclosure and Sale of NIN
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has expressed concern over recent revelations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) regarding the unlawful sale of personal data, including National Identification Numbers (NIN), by some Nigerians.
According to the EFCC, certain individuals—particularly youths—have been paying unsuspecting victims between ₦1,500 and ₦2,000 in exchange for their personal details, which are then resold to fintech companies for up to ₦5,000. NIMC described this trend as a serious security threat with potentially grave consequences for those involved.
In a statement, the Commission emphasized that it will not be held accountable for any personal information willingly shared—either directly or indirectly—for monetary gain or other incentives.
“NIMC has repeatedly warned Nigerians against disclosing their NIN or other sensitive personal data to unauthorized individuals or entities,” the statement noted. “It is crucial that all NINs presented for service access are thoroughly verified by the appropriate service providers before any transactions are completed.”
To strengthen data security and personal privacy, NIMC urged the public to download and use the NINAuth App, available on both the Apple iOS and Google Play Stores. The app allows users to secure their NIN, control who accesses their personal data, and access a variety of secure digital identity services.
The Commission reasserted its dedication to protecting the security of the National Identity Database and advised Nigerians to stay alert and cautious in managing their personal data.
