NiMet Forecasts Dust Haze, Thunderstorms, and Flood Risks Across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday; Urges Caution and Preparedness
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast predicting a mix of dust haze, thunderstorms, and rainfall across different regions of Nigeria from Monday through Wednesday. The agency has advised residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
In its Sunday weather outlook released in Abuja, NiMet forecasted light dust haze with good visibility over northern states including Borno, Zamfara, northern Kaduna, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina on Monday. Isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light rain are also expected in parts of Taraba and Adamawa States during the afternoon or evening hours.
The central region is expected to experience mostly sunny skies with some cloud patches, along with isolated thunderstorms and light rain forecasted for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, and Kogi States later in the day.
In the southern region, cloudy conditions are anticipated on Monday morning, with isolated thunderstorms and light rains over Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom States. By the afternoon and evening, more widespread thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are predicted across Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Ondo, Osun, Lagos, Ekiti, Ogun, Edo, Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom.
NiMet’s forecast for Tuesday indicates continued dust haze with good visibility over northern states. However, Taraba and Adamawa may experience persistent isolated thunderstorms and light rain throughout the day. The central region is expected to see sunny skies with intermittent clouds, with early morning thunderstorms possible in Benue and moderate rains across the FCT, Nasarawa, and Kogi States.
In the south, cloudy skies with moderate rainfall are expected in the morning over Rivers, Cross River, Ebonyi, and Akwa Ibom, intensifying later in the day. The agency warned of potential flooding in parts of Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River and urged authorities to activate emergency response measures.
For Wednesday, NiMet predicts sunny weather across the northern region, with isolated thunderstorms and light rain expected later in the day, especially over Taraba. The central region will likely experience mostly sunny conditions with some cloud patches, while the south will have cloudy mornings followed by thunderstorms and moderate rains in the afternoon and evening across Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Delta, and Akwa Ibom.
NiMet emphasized a high risk of flash floods and called on motorists to exercise caution in rainy conditions. The agency also advised residents, especially those with asthma and respiratory issues, to limit outdoor activities due to suspended dust particles in the atmosphere.
Airline operators were reminded to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for flight planning, and the public is encouraged to stay updated through the agency’s official channels.
