The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted thundery weather across the country from Sunday through Tuesday.
In its weather outlook released on Saturday in Abuja, NiMet highlighted the likelihood of localized thunderstorms in parts of Taraba, Adamawa, and southern Kaduna States during Sunday afternoon or evening. The North Central region is expected to experience partly cloudy skies in the morning.
As the day progresses, isolated thunderstorms are anticipated over Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kwara, Niger, and Kogi States. Meanwhile, the southern region will see a cloudy morning with possible localized thunderstorms affecting Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Delta States. In the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms may also occur in Anambra, Oyo, Ondo, Edo, Imo, Abia, Ekiti, Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Delta States.
On Monday, the northern region is expected to enjoy sunny skies throughout the day, except for isolated thunderstorms in parts of Adamawa, Kaduna, and Taraba during the afternoon or evening. The North Central region will have sunny weather with light clouds in the morning, transitioning to isolated thunderstorms later over Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, and Nasarawa.
The southern region can expect a mix of clouds and sunshine, with morning thunderstorms possible over Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River. Thunderstorms are also forecasted for the afternoon and evening over Ondo, Oyo, Edo, Imo, Abia, Anambra, Lagos, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Delta.
On Tuesday morning, the northern region should see sunny skies with few clouds, although isolated thunderstorms may affect Taraba State. Later in the day, further thunderstorms are anticipated in parts of Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna. The North Central is predicted to have similar weather conditions, with chances of isolated thunderstorms over Benue and Kogi States.
The southern region can expect cloudy skies in the morning, with thunderstorms possible over Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Lagos. Isolated thunderstorms are also likely in the afternoon across Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Anambra, Oyo, Ekiti, Edo, Ondo, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Rivers, and Bayelsa States.
NiMet has advised the public to stay in well-ventilated areas, hydrate regularly, and be aware that high temperatures may increase the risk of heat stress. Additionally, individuals are encouraged to get vaccinated against meningitis, practice good hygiene, avoid overcrowded spaces, wear masks to minimize the risk of infections, and limit exposure during peak sun hours (noon to 3 p.m.). Strong winds may precede any rain in areas anticipating thunderstorms.
Airline operators are also urged to obtain specific weather reports from NiMet for informed operational planning.
