Nursing Student Takes Her Own Life Over Unwanted Pregnancy in Ogun

A 300-level student named Ajoke from Havarde College of Science, Business and Management Studies in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has taken her own life, reportedly due to the anguish of an unwanted pregnancy. The young nursing student is said to have consumed a poisonous substance, suspected to be Sniper, on Monday evening.

Sources close to the situation revealed that Ajoke had been grappling with depression for over four months, exacerbated by the distressing revelation that her Basic Medical Science course was not accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

According to an insider, the deceased had consistently expressed her concerns, lamenting that her parents had invested their entire savings in her education. The situation took a turn for the worse when Ajoke discovered she was pregnant, adding another layer of turmoil to her already challenging circumstances.

Confirming the tragic incident, Dr. Ismail Oyetunji, the provost of the institution, shared that the circumstances leading to Ajoke’s death unfolded outside the school premises. The student was reportedly rushed to Hope Hospital in the Adigbe area of Abeokuta by her boyfriend, where she eventually succumbed to the effects of the poisoning.

Dr. Oyetunji clarified that the student’s parents were aware of the pregnancy and had visited the school to retrieve her belongings. Despite the non-accreditation of the nursing program, the provost maintained that the suicide was primarily connected to the pregnancy, and not the accreditation status of the course.

The institution’s management expressed condolences to the grieving family and prayed for their strength to endure this devastating loss. The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the mental health challenges faced by students, highlighting the need for greater awareness and support within educational institutions.
