Ogun Advocacy Group Urges Urgent Government Intervention to Save Farmlands.
An advocacy group, Ibile Justice Forum, has raised serious concerns over illegal mining activities in the villages of Iloro I, Iloro II, and Ibiri within the Ado-Odo community of Ogun State. The group called on both state and federal authorities to quickly intervene and reclaim the farmlands, which are vital to the local residents’ livelihoods.
In a statement issued by Messrs Ifeoluwa Amoo and Ganiu Owolabi, the forum condemned a mining company (name withheld) for attempting to operate in areas designated for agriculture. The group criticized the company’s actions, which they say are causing significant disruption to farming activities and threatening the community’s economic stability.
The statement highlighted the devastating impact of the illegal mining, noting that it has left the community economically weakened and environmentally damaged. The forum expressed outrage over what they described as the reckless exploitation of the community’s patrimony, which is causing destruction and endangering the well-being of residents.
Furthermore, the group accused traditional authorities of complicity, alleging that instead of protecting community interests, some local leaders are enabling the mining company for personal benefits. Despite official directives from the Ministry of Agriculture, issued on January 28, 2025, instructing the company to cease operations, and the withdrawal of its approval on December 5, 2024, the company continues its activities in defiance of these orders. This blatant disregard for government directives has raised serious concerns.
