Ogun Court Postpones Anthony Joshua Driver’s Trial
The trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the 46-year-old driver involved in the fatal accident that claimed the lives of Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, close friends of Nigerian-born boxing star Anthony Joshua, has been postponed to February 25, 2026.
According to a report by TVC on Tuesday, the case, which was set for hearing at the Sagamu Magistrate Court, was adjourned after prosecuting counsel Richard Nigiwe informed the court that “they have four witnesses, but only three were in attendance.” He explained that the adjournment was necessary to allow the prosecution to “duplicate the case file and present it to the Attorney General of the State through the Department of Public Prosecution for advice.”
Defense counsel Olalekan Abiodun objected, asserting that the prosecution “had enough time to do so prior to this date.” Nonetheless, the magistrate ruled that “in the interest of justice, the case should be adjourned to 25th February, 2026,” and directed the prosecution to duplicate the case file and submit it to the Attorney General’s office.
Following the court session, the defense lawyer expressed agreement with the decision, while Mr. Nigiwe declined to comment.
The case arose from a crash on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, when Kayode’s Lexus SUV collided with a stationary truck. The accident resulted in the deaths of Ayodele and Ghami, while Anthony Joshua and Kayode sustained minor injuries.
Kayode, facing four charges including dangerous driving, negligent driving, and driving without a valid license, was remanded in custody on January 2, 2026. He was later granted bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties. The Ogun State Police Command stated that he remains in custody pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions, and the case was initially adjourned to January 20 for trial.
On January 4, a funeral prayer service was held for Ayodele and Ghami at the London Central Mosque. Before their remains were repatriated, Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos to pay their respects.
The case has been postponed to give the prosecution time to complete legal procedures, with the next hearing scheduled for February 25, 2026.
