Ogun Inec Resident Electoral Commissioner, Barrister Niyi Ijalaye, Passes Away in Abuja
Tragedy struck on Monday evening when Barrister ‘Niyi Ijalaye, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ogun State, suddenly passed away in Abuja.
According to reliable sources, Ijalaye slumped and died in his hotel room after attending a meeting of RECs at the INEC headquarters. The meeting, which focused on upcoming off-cycle elections and vacant legislative positions, had concluded without incident, with Ijalaye reportedly in high spirits throughout.
A source at the Ogun State INEC headquarters confirmed that Ijalaye had returned to his hotel room before the incident occurred. The Ondo-born administrator had been posted to Ogun State in March 2022, following a transfer from Lagos State.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, had earlier posted updates from the meeting on the Commission’s Facebook timeline, including photos featuring Ijalaye. The sudden passing of the REC has sent shockwaves through the electoral community, with tributes pouring in for the late administrator.
