Ogun Penalizes 128 Residents and Businesses for Improper Waste Disposal
The Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) has penalized 128 residents and 20 companies for indiscriminate waste disposal across the state.
According to a statement signed by the Special Adviser and Managing Director of OGWAMA, Abayomi Hunye, the affected residents were sentenced to hours of community service after being caught dumping refuse on road medians and in public spaces in Sango-Ota, Ifo, Ijebu-Ode, Papa Lanto, and Abeokuta. Similarly, the industries were sanctioned after their trucks were apprehended disposing of waste along the verges of the Lagos-Ibadan and Sagamu-Abeokuta expressways.
Hunye explained that the arrests were carried out by the authority’s Enforcement Squad in the early hours of Tuesday, stressing that such actions are clear violations of the state’s environmental laws.
“What is worrisome is that those caught were intentionally undermining the state government’s efforts to maintain a clean environment. Investigations revealed that they deliberately refused to engage government-approved waste collectors in their communities and companies without any valid reason.
“Their conduct is not only a disregard for lawful directives but also poses a serious risk to the health and safety of other responsible residents who have embraced proper waste disposal practices for a cleaner, healthier, and safer state,” the Special Adviser stated.
Hunye further emphasized that the enforcement team will sustain its surveillance of roadsides and public areas to ensure offenders are apprehended.
