Ogun School closed Amid Sexual Assault Scandal
The Ogun State government has shut down Perfect Light Nursery and Primary School in Eyinogbe, Sagamu Local Government Area, following a disturbing incident involving the headteacher, Ashafa Afelaja, who was alleged of abusing a female pupil. Reports indicate that the assault caused significant harm to the child.
Adijat Adeleye, the Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Development, confirmed that Afelaja is in police custody, and the ministry is providing necessary support for the victim.
In addition to the arrest, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology announced the closure of the school for operating without proper authorization. Dr. Ronke Soyombo, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, visited the school and expressed her outrage at the alleged abuse and the poor conditions in which students were being educated.
Soyombo reassured the community that the state government, in collaboration with the Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Police Force, is thoroughly investigating the incident. She emphasized that legal action would be taken against the perpetrator and reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring safe learning environments for all students in both public and private institutions. She also encouraged parents to be vigilant in protecting their children from societal dangers.
Furthermore, the Special Adviser announced that the Ministry of Education is working closely with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Women’s Affairs to conduct medical evaluations for the affected child. She also promised that other students from the suspended school would be enrolled in the nearest state primary school in Igode to ensure their education continues without interruption.
