Ogun State Cracks Down on Street Trading: Taskforce Seizes Wares, Enforces Environmental Laws
Ogun State Ministry of Environment taskforce on Thursday swung into action towards eradicating street trading and display of wares on setbacks across the state.
The clampdown took place at Panseke, under the bridge, Omida, Sapon markets, as well as Iyana-Motuary junction, within the state capital.
The taskforce included officials from the Ministry, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, (TRACE), So-Safe Corps and Environmental Marshals, led by the Special Adviser to the State Governor, Faruk Akintunde.
Akintunde said the enforcement was necessary to make traders comply with environmental laws on maintenance of setbacks for safety of lives and property.
He explained that the government was not out to inconvenient the traders but was rather on the lookout for their safety.
According to him, several warnings had been sent to the traders ahead of the raid by the State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, adding that wares belonging to recalcitrant traders were seized.
Akintunde noted that the seized wares would only be claimed with payment of fine, saying the security of lives was paramount to the state government.
