Ogun state drums support for fed govt inclusion of indigenous languages in schools

The Ogun State government has expressed its support for the policy on the usage of indigenous languages to teach in primary schools.

The federal government had adopted the mother tongue as the mode of instruction in primary schools.

Speaking with newsmen in Abeokuta, the Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology in Ogun State, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, expressed the government’s support but said the federal government must develop adequate orthography of subjects in local languages spoken in Nigeria for the smooth teaching of students in their mother tongue.

Arigbabu spoke on the sidelines of the Ewa Ede Yoruba Annual symposium, organized by the Gbagede Ewa Ede Foundation, held in Abeokuta.

He applauded the decision of the federal government, saying that the gesture would develop education in the country and also prevent Nigerian languages from going into extinction.
