Ogun State Electoral Commission Rules Out New Voter Registration for Local Government Election
The Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) has announced that there will be no new voter registration for the forthcoming local government election in the state.
Chairman of OGSIEC, Mr. Babatunde Osibodu, made this known in a statement released on Friday, stating that the commission will rely on voter data compiled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2023 elections.
Osibodu explained that the commission lacks the mandate to register voters, hence the decision to use INEC’s existing voter database.
He emphasized the importance of participation from all political parties to ensure the integrity of the electoral process and uphold democratic values in the state.
The local government election is scheduled to hold in November, and OGSIEC has assured that necessary measures are being taken to prevent violence and ensure safety during the elections.
In a statement, Osibodu said, “There will be no new voter registrations for the 2024 local government elections. We will use voter data compiled by INEC for the 2023 gubernatorial elections. We encourage all parties to participate and field candidates to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.”
OGSIEC has also announced that it will adopt a manual collation process for the election.
