Ogun State Government Calls for People-Centered Approach to Combat Drug Abuse

The Ogun State Government has called on relevant stakeholders to utilize people-centered solutions in the fight against drug abuse. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Kayode Oladehinde, made this call during a press briefing in Abeokuta to commemorate the 2023 United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

He emphasized the need for adequate care and support for drug abusers in society, stating that drug abuse is a complex issue affecting millions of people worldwide across different age grades. He also noted that drug abusers face stigma and discrimination, which can further harm their physical, emotional, and mental health.

Dr. Oladehinde highlighted the negative consequences of drug abuse, such as disruption to normal brain function, changes in attitude and personality, truancy, job loss, and prostitution. He acknowledged that some people become addicted to drugs due to their innocence, and emphasized the need to deal with the stigma and discrimination that drug abusers face. He stated that the state government is committed to eliminating the scourge of drug abuse in society.

The call for people-centered solutions is expected to improve the approach to tackling drug abuse in the state. The government’s commitment to eliminating drug abuse is laudable, and it is hoped that the state will continue to take proactive steps to address the issue.

The commemoration of the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is an opportunity to raise awareness about the negative consequences of drug abuse and the need for a concerted effort to eliminate the problem.
