Ogun State Government Pledges to Break Down Societal Barriers for People with Disabilities

The Ogun State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to creating a more inclusive society for people living with disabilities (PLWDs). The government aims to break down societal stereotypes, provide equal job opportunities, and ensure access to education and healthcare services for PLWDs.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 1.3 billion people worldwide, or 16% of the global population, experience significant disabilities. In Nigeria, the National Commission for Persons With Disabilities (NCPWD) reported that 35.1 million people live with disabilities, facing significant challenges in accessing education, healthcare, employment, and social inclusion.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Motunrayo Adijat Adeleye, emphasized the government’s dedication to empowering PLWDs. She stated that the government is committed to providing more empowerment materials, mobility aids, professional working tools, and digital educational devices to support PLWDs.

“As we amplify the voices of Persons with Disabilities, we recognize their potential as transformative leaders and agents of change,” Adeleye said. “Their lived experiences and unique perspectives are invaluable in crafting solutions that promote inclusivity and sustainability.”

The government’s commitment to promoting inclusivity is reflected in its initiatives to create equitable job opportunities for PLWDs. Adeleye explained that the government aims to prioritize accessible education, ensuring that PLWDs have equal opportunities to learn and grow.

“We will continue to work steadfastly through policies and strategies in collaboration with concerned stakeholders both in the public and private sector to prioritize accessible education, create equitable employment opportunities, ensure healthcare services cater to diverse needs, and break down societal stereotypes,” Adeleye said.
