Ogun State Initiates Solar-Powered Street Lighting Project for Enhanced Safety

The Ogun State Government has initiated a comprehensive project to install solar-powered street lights across the region, aiming to bolster the safety and security of its residents.

The decision follows recent arrests of vandals caught stealing street light cables and components along the Sagamu Interchange-Abeokuta Expressway. Among the apprehended criminals was an individual involved in the theft of a transformer.

Speaking to reporters in Abeokuta, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Energy Matters, Mr. Oluwafemi Omisanjo, revealed that the persistent vandalism of government assets, particularly street lights on highways, prompted the administration to seek an alternative to generator-powered street lights. Consequently, Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration has opted for a more secure and sustainable solution by introducing a pilot scheme of solar-powered streetlights in selected areas of Abeokuta.

Omisanjo emphasized that the government plans to replace the traditional street lights on Sagamu Interchange-Abeokuta Expressway with a solar-powered system. Additionally, a comprehensive analysis is underway for the planned deployment of these solar-powered street lights to replace existing ones throughout the state.

Assuring the citizens, he stated, “Very soon, the people of Ogun State will witness the positive impact of this solution. We guarantee their security and well-being across all regions of the state.”
