Ogun State Receives Torch of Unity Ahead of 22nd National Sports Festival “Gateway Games 2024”

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has officially received the Torch of Unity in preparation for the commencement of the 22nd National Sports Festival, dubbed “Gateway Games 2024.”

The Governor was presented the Torch by Dorcas Adesokan, a distinguished athlete who won two gold medals at the 2014 African Youth Games and is a Women’s Singles and Doubles Champion. The handover took place at City Gate along the Abeokuta-Siun-Sagamu Expressway.

During the ceremony, Abiodun emphasized that the Torch, which traveled through various states after being handed over to the President of the National Sports Commission by President Bola Tinubu, symbolizes the collective aspirations of all Nigerians.

He stated, “The Unity Torch, starting its journey across the federation in March, signifies more than just the Gateway Games. It represents our shared hopes as a nation—highlighting how our diversity strengthens unity and how our youth are empowered to excel on the global stage.”

For Ogun State, the Torch embodies the state’s commitment to celebrating Nigeria’s rich sporting heritage. Abiodun described it as “a symbol of sportsmanship, unity, peace, and the resilient spirit of every Nigerian.”

The Governor highlighted that the festival aims to foster an environment where collaboration, friendship, and mutual respect thrive. He reiterated that these principles align with the core objectives of the National Sports Festival, established in 1973 to promote national unity, resilience, and sportsmanship.

He added, “This event reinforces Ogun State’s dedication to fostering national unity, youth development, and celebrating our diverse culture through sports.”

Expressing pride in hosting the festival for the second time, Abiodun said, “We are honored to receive the Torch of Unity and are ready to showcase our vibrant culture, hospitality, and the exceptional talents of our athletes.”

He concluded by expressing hope that the Torch will inspire love among Nigerian youths and serve as a unifying symbol for the entire nation.

The 22nd National Sports Festival is scheduled to commence on Friday, May 16th, 2025.
