Ogun State Unveils Gateway International Airport as Nigeria’s Most Technologically Advanced Facility
Ogun State Government has announced that Gateway International Airport boasts the most advanced technological facilities among Nigerian airports. Situated along the Ilishan/Iperu axis, the airport is designed with modern amenities and cutting-edge aviation technology to ensure durability and efficiency for years to come.
Captain Dapo Olumide, Managing Director of the airport, made the statement during a three-day training tour for journalists visiting Ogun State. He highlighted the importance of equipping the airport with the latest industry innovations, emphasizing that the facility’s electronic systems are all state-of-the-art.
Olumide explained, “This airport features the most advanced technology—not because of abundant funds, but because modern technology reduces long-term operational costs. It’s about efficiency and cost savings.” He pointed out that the control tower’s radar system can monitor aircraft beyond Lagos, reaching as far as Accra, Yaoundé, and Douala, demonstrating the airport’s strategic technological capabilities.
He also noted that while the physical construction of the airport has been completed, additional installations such as the landing systems, ramp lighting, and a 2-megawatt gas-powered plant are still underway. The facility will be staffed by officials from Nigerian Customs, NDLEA, Police, and other agencies to facilitate international flights.
Providing historical context, Ogun State’s Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Gbenga Dairo, stated that the airport was conceived to leverage its proximity to Lagos and to bolster the state’s ongoing industrialization efforts. Similarly, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Akinsanya, underscored the airport’s strategic location and adherence to global standards.
Akinsanya highlighted key features, saying, “We’ve done many things differently here. The airport has the longest runway in Nigeria—4 kilometers long—making it a Class E airport capable of handling large aircraft like Boeing 777, 747, or Airbus A330. The aircraft parking area covers 82,000 square meters and can accommodate about 20 aircraft at once.”
He added that commercial flights are expected to commence once all necessary approvals are obtained and assured that all construction materials and systems used meet the highest standards.
