Ogun State Vows Prosecution for Assault on Teacher: Student, Parents to Face Legal Action

The Ogun State government has declared its commitment to prosecute Akanni Azeez Olawale, an SS3 student of Agbara Grammar School, and his parents. The move comes in response to the alleged assault on one of the teachers of the school.

The State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, announced that legal action would be taken against Olawale and his parents, emphasizing the government’s stance against such misconduct in schools.

The incident occurred on February 14, following the school principal’s decision to seize Olawale’s uniform due to alleged unruly behavior. The principal maintained that since Olawale had registered for exams at another private school, he could not represent himself as a student of Agbara Grammar School. In response, Olawale, accompanied by his parents, reportedly attacked the principal and assaulted a teacher.

Commissioner Arigbabu affirmed that the state government would pursue legal action, emphasizing the need to curb such behavior in schools. He stated, “The boy and his parents will be prosecuted. It is a challenge that we have faced in the past when some parents joined their children in attacking teachers. However, since one parent received six months of community service, such incidents have decreased.”

Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) in Ogun State, Comrade Seun Agbesanwa, condemned the assault and urged the government to ensure appropriate sanctions against those involved in the attack on the teacher and principal.
