Ondo Police Capture Fake Army Officer Who Swindled Family of Retirement Benefits.
A 35-year-old man, Temigbe Adeola, has been arrested in Akure, Ondo State, for impersonating a Nigerian Army officer and defrauding a family of N1.2 million. The funds, part of the retirement benefits of the victim’s mother, were allegedly stolen after Adeola exploited the family’s trust. The arrest was based on credible intelligence suggesting Adeola’s involvement in the scam, which was disclosed in a statement by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Olushola Ayanlade.
The police revealed that the family had invested the money in property, and the victim’s son approached Adeola for assistance in retrieving the funds, believing him to be a serving military officer. Exploiting this trust, Adeola, along with accomplices who are still at large, deceitfully obtained the money and converted it for personal use. During interrogation, Adeola admitted to the crime, revealing that he was dismissed from the Nigerian Army in 2023 after serving with the 82 Battalion in Enugu.
The police emphasized the importance of public vigilance and assured that ongoing investigations are aimed at apprehending all involved parties. Adeola’s impersonation and criminal activities are still under investigation, and efforts are underway to locate his remaining accomplices. He is currently in lawful custody and will be charged in court once the investigation is complete.
The Ondo State Police also urged residents to remain alert and report suspicious individuals or activities to the authorities. DSP Ayanlade reaffirmed the police’s commitment to protecting lives and property, highlighting that the force is utilizing intelligence-driven operations under the guidance of the Inspector-General of Police to combat such crimes and uphold professionalism. The police’s proactive stance aims to prevent further fraud and ensure justice for victims of impersonation and financial scams.
