Osun Political Crisis Deepens as APC, PDP Clash Over Local Government Control.
The political clash in Osun State intensified as the APC and PDP, along with civil society groups, traded accusations over control of local government secretariats. The Network of Civil Society Groups claimed that APC chairmen occupying these offices had exceeded their legal tenure, which they said expired on October 26, 2025, and demanded their immediate removal. Addressing journalists in Osogbo, convener Stephen Olanrewaju accused the Osun Police Command of shielding these officials, whom he described as illegally occupying the council secretariats with police protection.
Olanrewaju traced the crisis to unresolved legal disputes dating back to February 2025, when a Federal High Court nullified local government elections conducted by the APC-led administration, ruling that the APC chairmen and councillors elected in that process were improperly installed. The court’s decision was upheld by the Court of Appeal in June 2025. Despite the rulings, Olanrewaju alleged that the sacked officials refused to vacate office, claiming they had a reinstatement order that did not exist, leading to their forceful occupation of local government offices.
He condemned the continued occupation as illegal and unconstitutional, urging security agencies to stop supporting what he called lawless actions. The PDP’s Director of Media, Oladele Bamiji, echoed this stance, stating that the APC chairmen have no legal tenure and should not be claiming office. He called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene, warning that the situation threatens Nigeria’s democracy if unchecked.
In response, APC spokesperson Kola Olabisi dismissed the allegations as misinformation, asserting the APC chairmen were reinstated by a Court of Appeal judgment in February 2025, which remains unchallenged. He added that a court case is ongoing to clarify the tenure of the reinstated officials and whether new elections can be held during their tenure, emphasizing that the legal process is still underway.
