Osun State Polytechnic Shuts Down Amid Cult Violence; Students Granted Mid-Semester Break
The management of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, has declared a temporary closure of the institution following a violent clash involving suspected cult groups near the school’s entrance on Tuesday.
The confrontation reportedly resulted in multiple injuries and raised concerns about potential fatalities among the participants from the rival factions engaged in the disturbance.
In response to the violence, officers from the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Osun State Police Command have been deployed to the area to help restore peace.
Dr. Tope Abiola, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, indicated that the violent incident transpired just outside the campus, leaving several individuals hurt. He mentioned that one critically injured victim was a former student of the polytechnic, having completed his National Diploma two years prior. “We were on campus when we heard gunshots. It appears that one person was seriously injured,” Abiola stated. “Another victim suffered injuries from stray bullets.”
Abiodun Ojelabi, the Public Relations Officer for the Osun State Police Command, confirmed that all injured parties are currently receiving medical treatment, although he did not verify any fatalities linked to the incident.
In light of the unrest, the polytechnic’s management has instructed all students to take a one-week mid-semester break, starting on Thursday, April 10, 2025. The Registrar, Abiodun Oloyede, detailed in a memorandum issued on April 9, 2025, that the matriculation ceremony that was set for the same day has been indefinitely postponed.
Students are encouraged to utilize the break to settle outstanding fees and complete their registration tasks, with a stern warning that no further appeals regarding these matters will be considered.
The internal memo read: “In light of requests from students unable to pay their fees or finalize their registration, Management has generously granted a one-week mid-semester break from Thursday, April 10, to Wednesday, April 16, 2025. This is intended to assist students in meeting their financial obligations and completing their registration procedures. Consequently, the matriculation ceremony scheduled for April 10 has been postponed, with a new date to be announced later. All students are urged to take advantage of this break to address their fees and registration, as no further appeals will be entertained.”
