Umar Sani, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has clarified that members expelled during the party’s recent National Convention are no longer recognized as a faction and do not have the authority to expel other members. Sani made this statement in an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show, emphasizing the legitimacy of the convention’s decisions.
He explained that the PDP did not conduct any secret expulsions. Instead, a formal motion was moved, seconded, and approved during the convention, making the expulsion process legitimate and transparent. Sani stressed that no Nigerian court has declared the convention illegal or invalid, meaning its outcomes are final and binding.
Sani further clarified that any attempt by expelled members to claim authority to expel others is baseless. “A member expelled at the convention has no right to go into hiding and then claim to have expelled others,” he stated. “The expulsion was done openly, through proper procedures.”
He also highlighted that during the convention, the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) was dissolved following a motion proposed by the Governor of Plateau State. Once dissolved, the NWC ceased to function as the party’s leadership. Subsequently, the Kabiru Turaki-led NWC was sworn in and immediately began its duties, reaffirming the party’s organizational stability.
Sani’s comments come amid ongoing disputes within the PDP over leadership and expelled members’ claims of authority. His clarification aims to reaffirm the legitimacy of the party’s recent decisions and emphasize that the convention’s resolutions are legally and organizationally binding.
