Peter Obi addresses claims about ties to Abacha
Peter Obi has clarified the circumstances surrounding his past meeting with the late military leader, General Sani Abacha, stating that it was unrelated to politics.
In a statement titled “Our Engagement with General Abacha: Setting the Record Straight,” Obi explained that the meeting took place decades ago during a period when traders and importers were facing severe delays at Nigerian ports.
“I had never met General Sani Abacha before that encounter,” Obi stated.
According to him, he and others were co-opted into a government Taskforce on port decongestion — a move to save businesses and restore economic sanity.
They approached Abacha, not as politicians, but as concerned citizens.
“Our intention was simple: fix the ports. No politics. No backdoor deals,” Obi stressed
To prove this, he attached a letter officially appointing him to the Taskforce
He also took a subtle jab at his critics, saying, “I don’t expect this overwhelming evidence to put the Abacha issue to rest. The troublemakers have their own agenda. But this is for the record and for posterity.”
Obi emphasized that the meeting was driven by national interest, not personal ambition.
“This aligns with my commitment to being transparent with Nigerians,” he added.
