Police Confirm Babcock Graduate Died Inside Hostel
The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the death of Samuel Akawa, a 20-year-old recent graduate of Information Technology from Babcock University, Ilishan Remo, Ogun State.
According to reports, Akawa was found unresponsive in his hostel room by his roommates on Wednesday. He was immediately taken to the University Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
When contacted on Saturday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident, stating, “The incident happened. It was reported to the Ilishan Police Station.”
Providing further details, the spokesperson for the institution, Joshua Sulaimon, said the deceased student had complained about his health a day before the incident.
He added that the deceased told his roommates that he would leave the next day to seek medical attention at home.
He said, “He complained to his roommate on July 29 that he was not feeling fine. It was in the evening, according to them. And his roommate advised him to go to the hospital for medical attention, but he said there was no need to go, as he would be leaving for home the next day, on July 30, and that he would receive medical attention from their family doctor.
The following morning, his roommates noticed he hadn’t woken up and alerted the hostel officer, who immediately rushed him to the hospital. Sadly, he did not respond to medical attention.
A security analyst, Zagazola Makama, shared via X on Friday that Akawa and some of his colleagues were on campus to complete their clearance process in preparation for graduation. He added that the deceased was in good spirits the night before, playing games on his laptop until around 11:00 p.m.
His body has been deposited at the university morgue for autopsy and preservation, while investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of death.
In a similar incident earlier this year, a tragedy occurred at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology when Emmanuel Nweke, a newly admitted 100-level Mathematics student, reportedly fell from a two-storey building in the Ikorodu area.
Grieving students recounted that Nweke had stepped out onto the first-floor balcony corridor to get some fresh air during a prolonged power outage. While on the corridor, he allegedly leaned on the railing, lost his balance, and fell from the weakened structure, sustaining severe head injuries. He died while being transported to the hospital.
