Police Rescue Baby Buried Alive by 20-Year-Old Mother in Kebbi, Suspect in Custody

The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old woman, Maryam Atiku, from the Nasarawa area of Kamba in Dandi Local Government Area, for allegedly attempting to take the life of her newborn by burying her alive.

Police Public Relations Officer, Nafiu Abubakar, said the incident happened on June 25, 2025, when Maryam gave birth to a baby girl and allegedly strangled her with a wrapper, covered her mouth, and buried her in a shallow grave at Malam Yaro bush.

The next day, June 26, a farmer, Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad, discovered a freshly dug grave on his farmland. On closer inspection, he raised an alarm, and residents dug it up, finding the baby alive.

The infant was immediately taken to the General Hospital, Kamba, where doctors confirmed her condition as stable.

Operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) later arrested the suspect, who reportedly confessed during interrogation.

Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, CP Bello M. Sani, strongly condemned the act, reaffirming the command’s zero tolerance for child abuse and gender-based violence. He urged parents and community leaders to ensure children’s safety and never endanger their future.

He also commended Kebbi First Lady, Zainab Nasir, for her support toward the baby’s welfare, and praised farmer Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad for his quick intervention that saved the child’s life.
