Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has called for the impeachment of President Bola Tinubu, accusing him of unlawfully deducting N100 billion every month from Nigeria’s federation account. El-Rufai made the remark during an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time,’ where he alleged that these deductions have been ongoing for over 15 months, totaling approximately N1.5 trillion.
El-Rufai emphasized that the deductions are unconstitutional because they are made without the approval of the National Assembly or the state assemblies. He noted that part of the money belongs to the states, which are supposed to appropriate such funds. The unauthorized withdrawals, according to him, violate constitutional provisions and constitute an impeachable offense.
The former governor questioned the whereabouts of the N1.5 trillion and expressed concern over its use. “Where has that money gone? What is it being used for?” he asked. He also pointed out that Nigeria’s security situation has deteriorated despite the large sums supposedly being allocated to security efforts. El-Rufai wondered why communities are now being asked to defend themselves, suggesting that the government’s failure to address security challenges is alarming.
He reflected on the current state of affairs, stating that if anyone had told him in 2022 or 2023 that Nigeria’s situation would be this dire, he would have thought they were mentally ill. His comments highlight growing frustrations among some political figures about the handling of Nigeria’s finances and security issues under President Tinubu’s administration. The call for impeachment underscores the deep political tensions and allegations of financial misconduct at the highest levels of government.
