President Tinubu Approves Massive Salary Increase for Judges, Justices
President Bola Tinubu has signed into law the Judicial Office Holders Salaries and Allowances Bill, ushering in a substantial 300% increase in salaries for judicial officers across federal and state levels. This development follows the National Assembly’s approval of the bill in June, which was initiated by President Tinubu’s executive proposal aimed at enhancing the remuneration and benefits of judicial officers.
The newly enacted legislation introduces a revamped salary structure, allowances, and benefits for judicial officers, thereby amending the Certain Political, Public, and Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances, etc.) Act, No.6, 2002.
Senator Basheer Lado, Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, praised the President’s decision as a testament to his dedication to ensuring fair and equitable compensation for Nigerian workers. Lado hailed the move as a landmark achievement, reflective of President Tinubu’s resolute commitment to elevating the welfare of Nigeria’s workforce.
The salary increase is poised to significantly bolster the financial well-being of judicial officers, with notable hikes in annual salaries. The Chief Justice of Nigeria will now receive N64m, while the President of the Court of Appeal will earn N62.4m, and Justices of the Supreme Court will receive N61.4m each. Additionally, heads of various courts will receive a basic salary of N7.9m annually.
Lado extended his commendations to the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives for their patriotic dedication to progressively enhancing the welfare of Nigerians. He also applauded the members of the 10th National Assembly for prioritizing the welfare of Nigerians by passing and transmitting the executive Bill.
