President Tinubu Reunites Wike, Fubara, And Rivers Lawmakers
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has brokered peace between key political figures in Rivers State, reuniting the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara; and members of the State House of Assembly.
The resolution followed a late-night meeting on Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where the aggrieved parties met with the President in a bid to end months of political tension in the state.
According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President once again demonstrated his commitment to restoring peace in Rivers.
“President Tinubu has demonstrated once again that he wants peace for Rivers State. Just like he brought together the political gladiators to sign a peace deal in December 2023, he repeated the same on Thursday night,” Onanuga posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
He confirmed that Wike, Fubara, and the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Chike Amaewhule, all participated in the peace meeting.
It was noted that the meeting with the President was to brief him on the resolution of the crisis. “From the body language after the meeting with the President, I can tell you that they (Wike, Fubara, and the lawmakers) have resolved their differences,” the source said.
The political impasse in Rivers State had centered on a power struggle between Wike and Fubara over control of the state’s political structure. The situation escalated to the point where, on March 18, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state, citing threats to the security of lives and property.
Following the declaration, the President suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. He also appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as the administrator to oversee the state’s affairs during the period of crisis.
The recent reconciliation marks a significant step toward restoring stability in Rivers State as President Tinubu continues to mediate political disputes across the country.
