Press Briefing: Sagamu Local Government Engages Electricity Officials Over Ongoing Blackout
The Sagamu Local Government has held an emergency meeting with the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) following the persistent blackout affecting Sagamu and its environs.
Opening the meeting, the Local Government Chairman, Ogbeni Jubril Olasile Odulate expressed serious concern over the prolonged power outage which has disrupted businesses, public services, and daily activities across the town. He stressed that the situation has become a major worry for residents and the local administration, hence the urgent need for clarification and immediate action from the electricity authorities.
Responding to the concerns, the IBEDC Business Manager of Sagamu Business Hub, Mr Olusegun Ebinowen, explained that the company is already working to resolve the situation and has begun sensitizing the public about the ongoing technical challenges. According to him, a town crier has been sent out to inform residents about the issues currently on ground and to reassure them that efforts are underway to restore normal power supply.
Further technical clarification was provided by the IBEDC Technical Engineer of Sagamu Business Hub, Mr Isaac Boyenle, who stated that the fault is not limited to Sagamu alone but is also affecting other major towns including Abeokuta, Ijebu Ode, and Mowe. He noted that the widespread nature of the problem requires coordinated technical intervention across multiple locations.
Following this explanation, the chairman asked how long residents should expect the blackout to continue. In response, the technical engineer stated that they could not give a definite timeline for full restoration at the moment. However, they assured that once supply stabilizes and accurate information becomes available, the public will be promptly informed.
The meeting ended with the Local Government reiterating its commitment to continue monitoring the situation and working closely with electricity authorities to ensure power is restored as quickly as possible for the benefit of all Sagamu residents. The chairman also pleaded with IBEDC officials to temporarily suspend disconnections and halt the issuance of electricity bills during the blackout period. In response, the Business Manager agreed that, for now, the company will suspend disconnections and pause the distribution of bills until the situation improves.
