Public Advisory: Traffic Management for Gateway Games 2025 in Ogun State
Ogun State is set to host the 22nd National Sports Festival, dubbed “Gateway Games,” from Friday, May 16th to Friday, May 30th, 2025. The event will feature athletes and officials from all 36 states of Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with activities taking place across multiple venues, notably in Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ide, Remo, Sagamu, and Ijebu-Ode.
In anticipation of the heavy traffic volume expected along key routes within Ogun State, particularly along the 18 major traffic corridors, the Ogun State Traffic Management Agency (TRACE) has issued a comprehensive traffic advisory to ensure safety, orderliness, and minimal disruptions during the festival.
Key Traffic Highlights and Advisories:
Abeokuta:
– The opening ceremony will be held at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Kuto, on Sunday, May 18th. Motorists not attending the event are advised to avoid roads leading to the stadium and its environs.
– From May 19th to May 30th, access to the Alake Sports Centre, Ijeja, will be restricted to one-way traffic to facilitate orderly movement. Vehicle owners parked along the route are urged to remove their vehicles by May 18th to prevent towing.
Sagamu and Surrounding Areas:
– Roads including the NYSC Camp Gate, RSS Roundabout, Isale Oko Turning, Ita-Oba Junction, High Court Junction, and Express Junction will be manned by TRACE and security personnel to prevent chaos and traffic obstructions.
Ikenne and Ilisan:
– Traffic routes in these areas will be carefully monitored to ensure smooth flow. Motorists are encouraged to stay alert, obey signage, drive defensively, and watch out for athletes, especially cyclists.
Ijebu-Ode:
– Traffic diversions will be in place around Dipo Dina Stadium to facilitate safe access for athletes and dignitaries. Motorists traveling towards Idobi-Idomila from Itale-Odoegbo should make a U-turn at Talbot Roundabout, then follow designated routes via Mosun Cafe and NTA junction to connect GRA and Idomila Road.
– Vehicles heading from Idomila towards Palace Road and Itale are advised to use Otunba Onanuga Street, then turn at Femtos junction to reach Talbot Roundabout.
Traffic Management Measures:
– About 10,000 athletes and officials will be housed at Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo, with TRACE and other security agencies deployed along the major corridors to ensure effective traffic flow and security.
– Enhanced signage and roadside information will guide drivers through diversions and routes changes.
Authorities urge the public and motorists to cooperate with traffic personnel, exercise patience, and plan their journeys ahead of time to reduce inconveniences. The measures aim to guarantee safety, reduce delays, and facilitate a successful hosting of the Gateway Games.
