Remo Community on State Creation Reacts to the Proposal for Ijebu-Remo State

The Remo Committee on State Creation has strongly refuted claims that the Remo people have embraced the proposed Ijebu-Remo State, clarifying that their position remains in favor of a standalone Remo State with Sagamu as its capital.

In a statement signed by Aare Dr. Kola Oyefeso Aare Gbo-Gbo-Gbo(GGG) of Remo-land and Chairman of the Remo Committee on State Creation, and Secretary,Remo Committee on State Creation Wole Awe Esq., the committee responded to comments made by Senator Gbenga Daniel at a recent Senate public hearing on state creation. The Senator had suggested that Remo people were in support of an Ijebu-Remo State due to the lack of traction for the Remo memorandum.

The Committee described such claims as “utterly misleading” and reaffirmed that Remo’s memorandum, previously submitted before the official deadline, represents their unwavering desire for a distinct state identity. They emphasized that the Remo people are not opposed to Ijebu people pursuing their own state ambitions, but stressed that Remo-Land must be excluded from such plans.

“The proposal for an Ijebu-Remo State is a brokering initiative being promoted by Senator Gbenga Daniel and some elders from both Ijebu and Remo backgrounds,” the statement noted. “However, the Remo people’s position, as outlined in our memorandum, remains unchanged.”

The Committee also dismissed insinuations that the absence of mention of the Remo memorandum among the 46 memoranda acknowledged by the National Assembly indicates lack of support or relevance.

They called on the public and stakeholders to avoid misinterpretations and warned against being misled by individuals who “prioritize arrogance over tact and mutual respect.”

Reaffirming their respect for both the Akarigbo of Remo and the Awujale of Ijebu, the committee stated its commitment to maintaining the historic relationship between the two regions, but not at the cost of Remo’s identity.
