Remo Methodist High School, Sagamu Marks 25th Anniversary with Debate and Cultural Display
Remo Methodist High School, Sagamu, is celebrating its 25th Anniversary with a series of academic and social activities scheduled to hold from Sunday, 2nd February to Friday, 7th February 2026. The silver jubilee celebration began with a colourful rally that brought together students, staff, and members of the host community in a joyful display to mark the milestone achievement of the institution.
The second day of the anniversary featured an inter-school debate competition hosted by Remo Methodist High School, Sagamu. Schools invited to participate included Otunba Onajobi Model College and Remo Methodist High School, Iperu. The programme commenced with a welcome address delivered by the Principal, Rev. Mercy Shonuga, who warmly received all guests, staff members, participating schools, board members, and other stakeholders. She encouraged everyone present to engage meaningfully with the programme and to learn from the issues raised during the debates.
The main debate topic for the competition was “Education is a Scam.” In the first round, Remo Methodist High School, Iperu, faced off with Otunba Onajobi Model College in three intense rounds, after which a concluding round involved the host school, Remo Methodist High School, Sagamu. The debate session was intellectually stimulating and showcased the confidence, critical thinking, and oratory skills of the students.
A short break followed the first session, during which students of the host school entertained guests with an energetic Igbo cultural dance performance, adding colour and cultural richness to the event.
The programme continued with another round that featured impromptu speeches on the topic “Should sports be made compulsory in schools?” This was followed by a discussion among the three participating schools on the topic “Is social media beneficial to teenagers?” where students expressed varied opinions supported by practical examples.
At the end of the debate competition, Remo Methodist High School, Sagamu, emerged overall winner, while Remo Methodist High School, Iperu, came second and Otunba Onajobi Model College placed third. In the face-off category, Otunba Onajobi Model College secured first position, with Remo Methodist High School, Iperu, taking second place.
The leadership of the school was well represented during the event, with Mr. JM Bamidele Ibikunle serving as the Proprietor, Chief Mrs. Abiola Oguntayo as the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mrs. Mopelola Okusanya as the Education Manager and Chairman of the 25th Anniversary Committee, and Rev. Mercy Shonuga as the Principal of the school.
The debate sessions were moderated by Mr. Okeke, Mrs. Bakare, Dr. Oyeniran, Mr. Oladunke Olushola, Mrs. Kehinde Shofoyeke, and Dr. Aremi Saying, who ensured a fair, engaging, and well-coordinated competition throughout the programme.
Dignitaries and stakeholders present at the event included the guest speaker, Mr. Osho Sunday, who also serves as the PTA Treasurer, alongside Mr. Ayo, the PTA Chairman, and Mrs. Showemimo, the PTA Vice Chairman. The 25th Anniversary celebration continues with more activities designed to celebrate academic excellence, discipline, and the enduring legacy of Remo Methodist High School, Sagamu.
