Remo Stars Deny Resignation Rumors, Express Support for Coach Daniel Ogunmodede

Remo Stars, the reigning champions of the Nigeria Premier Football League, have dismissed rumors claiming that their long-serving head coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, has resigned. The club also expressed strong support for Ogunmodede as he continues his role, particularly noting his ongoing commitments with the Super Eagles.

Several outlets had reported on Tuesday that Ogunmodede had tendered his resignation following strained relations with the club’s management. However, the coach has been absent from the Sky Blue Stars’ dugout since their heavy 5-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of the CAF Champions League second-round preliminary match. He also missed the return leg and was not present during their 3-1 loss to Kwara United last weekend.

Amidst the speculation, it was later confirmed that Ogunmodede was in Abuja attending a CAF B coaching course. In response to the rumors, Remo Stars clarified that Ogunmodede remains an integral part of their technical team and continues as head coach.

“Remo Stars Football Club wishes to clarify that our head coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, remains an active member of our technical staff and continues to serve as the head coach of Remo Stars FC. He is currently attending a CAF B coaching course in Abuja as part of his ongoing professional development and dedication to personal and technical growth,” the club stated on Wednesday.

Ogunmodede has also been working closely with Super Eagles head coach, José Peseiro, as an assistant coach. His involvement with the national team caused him to miss over ten league matches last season, during which Remo Stars clinched their first-ever NPFL title after finishing as runners-up in previous seasons. He was also away with Nigeria’s B team at the CHAN tournament, missing much of the club’s pre-season preparations.

With upcoming national team commitments, including the 2025 AFCON qualifiers and potential intercontinental play-offs, the club has expressed full support for Ogunmodede to continue balancing his dual roles.

“He will also maintain his role with the Nigeria national team as they prepare for the FIFA World Cup African qualifiers, the potential intercontinental play-off, and the Africa Cup of Nations later this year. We believe this is a crucial period that requires collective support and dedication to the progress of Nigerian football,” the club added.

Ogunmodede, 45, who signed a three-year contract extension in August 2024 that keeps him at the club until 2027, has played a key role in Remo Stars’ rise in Nigerian football. His leadership helped guide the club to their first NPFL title last season, following back-to-back second-place finishes.
