Rescue Operations Ongoing After Building Collapse in Lagos, 15 Rescued
A building collapse in Lagos early Monday morning has reportedly left an unspecified number of individuals trapped inside. The incident occurred at a two-storey structure located at 54 Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop in the Oyingbo area.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the collapse in a report released by its Director, Margaret Adeseye. According to her, the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station responded swiftly after receiving a distress call at approximately 12:20 a.m.
The affected building had previously shown signs of structural distress, and it collapsed while residents were still inside. Rescue operations are ongoing at the scene.
So far, 15 people—comprising seven men, four women, and four children—have been rescued with varying injuries. They have been transported to the Federal Medical Centre in Ebute-Metta and the General Hospital in Odan, Lagos Island.
Building collapses remain a recurring tragedy in Nigeria, especially in Lagos, often attributed to lax enforcement of building regulations, use of substandard materials, and inadequate inspections. One of the most notable recent incidents was the collapse of a luxury high-rise under construction in Ikoyi in November 2021, which resulted in at least 42 fatalities. Investigations revealed that the building had exceeded the approved number of floors.
Another collapse occurred in September 2025 in the Yaba district, involving a four-storey building under construction, leading to multiple deaths and individuals trapped. Rescue efforts are still underway.
